The Lisbon boys track team started 2024 like it ended 2023, with a team title.
The Lions won the Class 1A boys title at the IATC Indoor Championships on Thursday in Ames with 65 team points. Bellevue was second with 42 points.
“It was a great first meet,” Lisbon coach Lonnie Speidel said. “We had contributions from all event areas – the sprints, distances, jumps and throws. We took 15 guys and 13 of them helped us score team points.
“It was a great effort by all.”
Lisbon won four events. Baylor Speidel won the 60-meter dash in 6.99 seconds, and Michael Gadberry won the 800-meter run in 2:01.76.
Lisbon also won two relays – the 4×100 and distance medley. Quinn Coleman, Dakota Clark and Reid Fridley ran on both, with Tiernan Boots running the anchor leg of the 4×100, and Gadberry running the 800 leg of the distance medley.
On Friday, the Lisbon girls also won the 1A title at the IATC Indoor Championships. The Lions compiled 41 points, topping second-place West Bend-Mallard by 10 points.
“I am so proud and happy for the girls,” Lisbon coach Brett Epperly said. “Our sprint medley team started out the day strong and that set the tone for the team.”
The Lions had two relays win gold. The foursome of Brynn Epperly, Ava Czarnecki, Addy Happel and Addie Clark won the sprint medley and 4×100.
Czarnecki and Epperly were second and fourth, respectively, in the long jump.
MOUNT VERNON
The Mustang girls participated in the IATC Indoor Championships in Ames, placing sixth in the 3A division.
ADM won with 84.5 points.
“I’m hoping this will provide us a little momentum as we move forward,” Mount Vernon coach Kory Swart said. “We should have almost everyone competing at the WaMac Indoor after break.”
Caliana Whitaker placed second in the open 200 (26.38 seconds) and also ran anchor on the fifth-place sprint medley and fifth-place 4×100.
The 4×800 team also earned silver, finishing in 10 minutes, 17.81 seconds. That team included Abbie Moss, Eastin Whisner Erin Moeller, and Kiersten Swart.
