Cornell captured its first-ever women’s indoor relay title with a record-setting effort in the sprint medley at Friday’s Midwest Conference Track & Field Championships inside the Willmore Center.
The foursome of senior Caitlyne Mar, freshman Willow Ziegler, senior Sidney Brown and sophomore anchor Ava Claussen-Tubbs made history, clocking a winning time of 4:16.64 that was a full seven seconds ahead of runner-up Ripon.
The sprint medley shattered the previous school record of 4:19.65, set in 2017.
Sophomore Hailey Carolan successfully defended her title in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 3 inches. She won a tiebreaker for first place over Beloit’s Liz Kalk. The Rams have now taken the event three years in a row.
Carolan leaped a personal-best 16-7.75 in the long jump to place fifth. She also anchored the sixth-place 4×200 relay of Mar, Ziegler and Olivia Cotton in 1:50.54.
Sophomore Alyza Koppes ran fifth in the 5000 (18:12.15). Freshman Nia Howard placed seventh in the high jump (4-9).
Carolan and Howard both qualified for Saturday’s finals in the 60 hurdles. Carolan posted the second-fastest prelims time (9.72) while Howard was eighth (10.60).
With many potential points ahead, Cornell stands fifth in the nine-team field with 33 points through eight scored events. Saturday’s action gets underway at 10:30 a.m.
