Mount Vernon’s senior Klayten Perreault was a state champion wrestler for the Mount Vernon Mustangs Saturday, Feb. 17, in the 106 pound division. Perreault went undefeated in his matches at Des Moines, taking an early round bye before facing off against Gavin Knutson of Decorah, Kale Berinobis of Waukee and Easton Enyeart of Ames. He wrestled against Cael McCabe of Fairfield in the final match. Perreault finished with a 42-0 record.
Jase Jasper sat 138 pounds placed second overall for the Mustangs at the state meet as well.
Mount Vernon were also runner-up finishers at the state tournament, with 110 points overall in the state tournament. According to Dave Ryan, that is the highest finish for a Mount Vernon team at the traditional state tournament in school history.
At the same time as the wrestling tournament, the Mount Vernon girls basketball team also punched their ticket to compete in this year’s state basketball tournament.
