Lisbon had three wrestlers make the podium at the Class 1A State Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
Tiernan Boots (144) placed fourth, Wesley Sadler (106) placed fifth, and Matthias Kohl (165) placed seventh.
Lisbon finished eighth in the 1A team race, won by Don Bosco.
“We had high days and low days … but that’s the state tournament,” Lisbon coach Aaron Helmrich said. “We had three guys finish on the podium. That’s half the guys we took down there.”
Among the high days was Thursday, when the Lions went 10-0 – two winning their quarterfinal matches (Salder and Boots), and four wrestlers winning twice in consolations.
“A 10-0 day doesn’t happen often,” Helmrich said. “As a coach, you just hope guys can stay in as long as they can, and make it to Saturday. We put together a great tournament.”
The Lions were a young group and only graduate three wrestlers. They bring 37.5 of the 59 points scored at state back for 2025.
“It is pretty exciting,” said first-year coach Helmrich. “It was a fun first year, getting to know the coaches and teams in Eastern Iowa. Learning more about my guys. It’ll drive what we do next year.”
