Lisbon crowned three champions and advanced six wrestlers to the state tournament following the Class 1A District Meet on Saturday, Feb. 10, in Wilton.
Lisbon finished runner-up as a team with 149 points, only behind Wilton (224).
Wesley Sadler (106), Tiernan Boots (144) and Matthias Kohl (165) won titles. Gage Holub (157), Indy Ferguson (215) and Jonah Reiling (285) all finished second and also punched their ticket to Des Moines.
Kohl, who only returned from injury a month ago, was dominant, winning three matches, all by pin, including in 38 seconds over Michael Raines of New London in the championship.
“He looked really tough,” Lisbon Coach Aaron Helmrich said. “He’s really come on as of late. He is just getting more and more comfortable every time he wrestles.”
Helmrich praised Reiling, who lost to third-ranked Aiden Salow of Maquoketa Valley in the championship in sudden victory, 7-5, then bounced back to win his wrestleback. He pinned Hunter Han of Louisa-Muscatine in 53 seconds.
The Class 1A state meet begins Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. The Lions district champs got strong seeds at state – Sadler is third, Boots fifth, and Kohl eighth. The district runner-ups will have a tougher road — Holub is 22nd, Ferguson 17th, and Reiling 19th.
“If you get mad at one seed, then praise another seed … you can’t have it both ways,” Helmrich said. “There is not a state meet where you get all the perfect seeds.
“Some guys didn’t get seeded high enough with their body of work … but I’m happy we got six guys that are going to down there and contend.”
