Osage and Mount Vernon were ranked one-two in Class 2A for pretty much the entire season. So, a head-to-head clash was expected at the IHSAA State Dual Tournament.
However, it came in the third-place match Saturday, Feb. 3, at Xtream Arena in Coralville. Osage won, 44-28, and Mount Vernon finished fourth for the second straight season.
“We’d like to get better than fourth, but that’s the way it worked out,” Mount Vernon coach Vance Light said. “We got beat by good teams.”
No. 2 Mount Vernon lost to No. 3 Creston, 44-24, in the semifinal round. No. 1 Osage lost to No. 5 Sergeant Bluff-Luton, 36-33.
Creston went on to beat SBL 36-33 in the championship.
“The object was to wrestle Osage, and we got to,” Light said. “That far down the line, I am not sure any of those were upsets.
“Duals are all about matchups, and we didn’t match up very well.”
Mount Vernon advanced to the state duals Tuesday, Jan. 30, during Regionals. No. 14 Solon topped No. 18 Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, 38-28, in the first match, then No. 2 Mount Vernon topped the Spartans, 46-15.
That was the seventh trip to the state duals overall for Mount Vernon. The Mustangs beat Algona in the quarterfinal round, 32-24, Saturday morning.
Senior Klayten Perreault had three pins Saturday, bringing his season total to 35, a new school record, and his career total to 91, also a new school record.
Mount Vernon finished the duals season with a school-record 27 wins to 3 losses.
“That’s a pretty good dual year,” Light said.
Next is a Class 2A District Meet on Saturday, Feb. 10, in Solon. The top two wrestlers at each way qualify for the state tournament the following week in Des Moines.
