What could’ve been a dramatic win for the Lions turned to spoiled milk Tuesday, Jan. 30, in a 60-59 loss to North Cedar in the Lion’s Den.
After trailing by nine points late in the third quarter, Lisbon rallied to take the lead, 52-50, on a Daylin Schaefer 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter.
From that point on, there were seven lead changes and two ties.
With 27.5 seconds left, North Cedar senior Hunter Lohman hit 1-of-2 at the line to give his team a 58-56 lead.
Lisbon junior Grayson Wollum calmly sunk a 3-pointer to put the Lions ahead and force a time out for the Knights with 14.7 seconds left.
“Our team knows that a great shot is always best, no matter how much time is left,” Lisbon Coach Levi Montague said. “If Grayson doesn’t take that shot, we might not get a better look.”
North Cedar senior Johny Amina delivered at the other end, putting in a short-range shot with 2.1 seconds left. The Knights deflected the inbounds pass to end the game.
It was a tough loss for the Lions, who had beaten North Cedar 68-45 in December in Stanwood.
But Tuesday they were without leading scorer Michael Gadberry, who did not play.
In his absence, junior Jackson Powers stepped up and scored 11 points.
“Jackson has been a great spark for us lately and does a nice job filling the stat sheet,” Montague said.
Wollum had a team-high 20 points, followed by Schaefer with 17.
A busy week also included a 91-73 loss to Calamus-Wheatland on Monday, Jan. 29, and a 65-41 win over Starmont on Friday, Feb. 2. Lisbon is 10-9.
Wollum recorded a triple-double in the win over the Stars with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
The Lions closed out the regular season with trips to Prince of Peace on Monday, Feb. 5, and to Midland on Tuesday, Feb. 6.
As of Monday, the Lions were waiting to find out their Class 1A district assignment. District play begins Friday, Feb. 9.
