The growth is there.
Lisbon beat North Cedar in December in Stanwood by 15 points. Then, Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the Lion’s Den, Lisbon rolled to a 28-point win without their leading scorer against the Knights.
“It shows the progress we have made this season,” Lisbon coach Nate Hutcheson said. “Every one of our girls have improved their skill and basketball knowledge, and as a result their confidence on the court Is higher than ever.”
The Lions rolled out to a 10-2 lead thanks to baskets from four different players – Emma Pleasant, Kamryn Kahl, Addy Happel and Chloe Clausen.
“We’ve grown pretty well,” Clausen said. “We had lots of assists, lots of kicking and driving, which got us a lot of points.”
Playing without freshman Morgan Sauser, who is out with a knee injury, the Lions kept up the offensive pressure and led 22-9 after one quarter.
The Knights cut it to eight points, 30-22, late in the second quarter, but never got closer. And a 13-3 run to start the second half put it out of reach.
Clausen had 20 points and Kahl had 22 to pace the Lions,
The night prior, Lisbon lost to No. 8 Calamus-Wheatland, Tri-River East leaders, 58-28.
Then Friday, Feb. 2, the Lions dominated the winless Starmont Stars, 47-10. Lisbon led 27-2 at half.
“Every game we are better than the last,” Hutcheson said. “It’s just against tougher competition we might make a significant amount of progress but still come away with a loss.
“That’s fine, we are focused on making the necessary improvements for each game.”
The Lions (7-13) closed out their regular season Monday, Feb. 5, at Prince of Peace. They next travel to Dyersville Beckman for a first-round Class 2A regional game on Saturday, Feb. 10.
“We want to see how far we can go,” Clausen said.
