With five total snow days taken in January, the Lisbon school board will be looking at ways to add additional hours back to the remaining calendar.
Superintendent Autumn Pino said she is looking at possibly converting some early out days to full school days.
“We were slammed with two huge winter storms back to back,” Pino said. “Both storms provided reasons to cancel school.”
Board member Robyn Richey commended Pino for making the decisions on cancellations or late starts earlier as opposed to later.
“People really appreciated the advance notice,” Richey said.
Pino knows closing Lisbon Early Childcare Center locations during the two storms did provide hardships for many parents, but with many businesses also taking the advice from law enforcement and first responders to take the severity of the storms seriously, they were shuttered during both storms.
When it comes to running a bus route, the school always maintains at least one bus in the fleet ready to step in and take over if there is any mechanical issue with the bus or getting stuck along the route.
The first school day converted from an early out day to a traditional day was Wednesday, Jan. 17.
“If it’s a day where we’re bringing in a speaker for staff development, we will not convert those days into learning days, but we’re looking at this now,” Pino said. “We’re only halfway through January with several more weeks of winter ahead of us.”
Pino said she is looking to keep getting out of school ahead of Memorial Day as opposed to adding additional days to the end of the school year.
Lisbon had 37.5 hours built into the schedule for snow days or late starts, and five full snow days used up those hours.
