Mount Vernon’s school district has received 20 complete applications for the district’s upcoming superintendent opening at the end of this school year.
Current superintendent Greg Batenhorst will retire then as district superintendent.
The application deadline for the superintdent position was January 5.
The current school board, along with former members Lori Merlak and Sherry Grunder, met in closed session January 17 to discuss the applications with the board’s search consultant.
The consultant had put together additional information on the applicants and narrowed down the list of candidates from 20 to 14. During last week, the school board narrowed candidate pool to six finalists.
Initial interviews for the position are being conducted the week of January 22 by the school board, the three school principals and the school board’s secretary/treasurer Michael Marshall, with a goal of narrowing to a group of finalists for the position.
Final interviews will be conducted the week of Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. by the school board, community members, teachers and students. The goal is to have a new superintendent selected by the end of next week, with that person beginning in the role July 1.
