The Rams opened the indoor track & field season with 15 event victories at the Cornell Winter Classic Friday night in the Small Athletic and Wellness Center Arena.
Cornell’s women captured titles in 10 of the 14 contested events, led by four-time champion Hailey Carolan. Isaac vanWestrienen swept both distance races to pace Cornell’s men in the non-scored meet that included Culver-Stockton and Southeastern Community College.
An all-American high jumper a year ago, Carolan had a stellar start to her sophomore season with individual titles in the high jump (5-3.50), long jump (15-11) and 60 hurdles (10.17). Carolan also ran on the winning 4×400 relay (4:14.26), comprised of Sidney Brown, Willow Ziegler and Ava Claussen-Tubbs.
Claussen-Tubbs won the 800 in a quick early-season time of 2:20.69. Ziegler crossed first in the 200 (28.52) in her Cornell debut. Brown earned a win in the 400 (1:02.27) and Alyza Koppes raced to victory in the 3000 (11:30.49).
Junior Sam Koth was crowned champion in the weight throw (35-7.50) and was part of the winning 4×200 relay (1:57.27) that included Caitlyne Mar, Robin Mar and Olivia Cotton.
Cornell’s men collected five event wins, headed by vanWestrienen’s distance double in the mile (4:17.44) and 3000 (8:56.11).
Mick Bahu recorded a winning weight throw of 43-9.50, while first-year Hadley Beaty dominated the 200 (23.58) in his collegiate debut. Junior Isaak Hutchings won the 600 in 1:26.95.
The Rams added seven runner-up performances, including Jaxin McGuire who ran 7.22 in the 60.
