Eli Sneed, Landon Card, Brian Petry and Treyten Steffen were two-time winners Saturday as Cornell’s wrestling team went 1-1 at the Pointer Duals.
The Rams won eight contested bouts in a convincing 34-7 victory over UW-Stevens Point. Cornell fell 23-12 to Luther in the final dual of the day.
Cornell (3-5) handled the host Pointers with seven bonus-point wins, including the eighth pin of the season from sophomore heavyweight Jackson Brinker, who decked his opponent in 3:14.
Card earned a 17-2 technical fall, while Cornell’s 125-pounder Jayden Rael upset sixth-ranked Luca Paladino by a 10-4 margin. Rael improved to 10-1 on the season.
The Rams received major decisions from Sneed (14-3 at 133), AJ Parrish (9-0 at 141), Gabriel Smith (21-8 at 157), Petry (16-3 at 174) and 17th-ranked Steffen (17-4 at 197).
Cornell won four of the 10 bouts with Luther (1-1), which secured bonus points in three matches.
Sneed (5-4 at 133), Card (13-9 at 149), Petry (4-2 at 174) and Steffen (5-2 at 197) all claimed tight decisions for Cornell’s match wins. Petry (12-7) posted his team-high 12th win of the season.
Earlier in the week, the Rams took five matches against Loras.
A couple extra bonus points were all the separated Cornell’s wrestling team and 16th-ranked Loras in the Rams’ 21-19 dual loss Thursday night inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
The Rams (2-5) and Duhawks (2-1) won five matches apiece in a tightly-contested meet that saw the lead switch hands three times.
Sophomore 157-pounder Gabriel Smith gave Cornell its last lead of the night with an impressive 10-7 decision over 14th-ranked Gabe Fiser, the defending regional champion. Smith (9-3) rallied in the third period with a takedown and two-point near fall that pushed the Rams ahead 10-8 at the halfway point of the dual.
Loras regained momentum by taking the next three matches, including a 7-4 battle at 184 between nationally-ranked wrestlers in Loras’ Zeb Gnida and Cornell’s No. 15 Cael McLaren (5-2).
The Rams cut into the 21-10 deficit with two wins to finish the meet. No. 17 Treyten Steffen (6-1) earned a 10-4 decision over Kam Royster, and then Cornell sophomore heavyweight Jackson Brinker recorded a quick pin in 36 seconds over Jake LaMonto.
Brinker (11-3) tallied his team-high seventh fall of the season.
Cornell built a 7-0 advantage to open the dual. Jayden Rael (9-1) relied on a second-period reversal to claim a 2-1 win over Carter Anderson at 125. Sophomore Eli Sneed (6-4) recorded four takedowns in his 14-6 major decision over Justin Murray at 133.
Cornell 141-pounder AJ Parrish was edged 3-1 by Nosa Egbon. Loras’ 13th-ranked Eric Kinkaid won by technical fall, 17-2, over Landon Card at 149.
The Duhawks picked up key bonus points at 165 (Ben Faber 16-6 major decision over Scotty Scheidecker) and 174 (sixth-ranked Dustin Bohren pin in 1:52 over Brian Petry).
