Cornell sophomore Gabriel Smith was crowned champion in the 157-pound division, heading eight Cornell placewinners at Saturday’s MSOE Invitational.
Coach Brent Hamm’s Rams took runner-up in the 13-team field with 90 points, edging third-place UW-Whitewater by one-half point. Top-ranked Augsburg won the tournament with 202 points.
Smith stamped a 5-0 performance with a 2-1 victory over Augsburg’s Karsen Otis in the championship match. Smith tallied three decisions, one fall and one technical fall, boosting his season record to 8-3.
Brian Petry at 174 and Jackson Brinker at 285 both finished third for the Rams. Petry fell 5-4 in the quarterfinals to Preston Carlisle of UW-Eau Claire. He bounced back with three consolation wins, including a 6-1 win over Carlisle in a rematch for third place.
Brinker reached the semifinals with consecutive falls against Edward Perry of Chicago (0:39) and Garner Simmons of UW-Whitewater (4:37). He lost in the semifinals by technical fall to Augsburg’s top-ranked and eventual champion Tyler Kim. Brinker pinned teammate Quinn Wilcoxen (0:41) and scored an 8-3 decision over Caden Koeppel of UW-Whitewater to take third.
At 125, Jayden Rael and Jase Van Pelt placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Rael finished 3-1 on the day, Van Pelt 2-2.
Scotty Scheidecker placed fifth at 165, while Eli Sneed (133) and Wilcoxen (285) both placed sixth to round out Cornell’s placewinners. Braydon Hoffman was the consolation champion at 197.
