The No. 2 Mount Vernon wrestling team opened the season strong, topping Williamsburg in a Wamac dual, 51-12, then taking first-place at the Newton Cardinal Classic on Saturday.
On Thursday, Nov. 30, the Mustangs were tied with the Raiders 12-12 after five matches, then won eight straight to put it away.
“I think everyone wrestled pretty well,” Mount Vernon Coach Vance Light said. “It was a good start to the year.”
Light noted the Mustangs lost two decisions by one point … so the margin could’ve been bigger.
Ethan Wood (285), Klayten Perreault (106), Jase Jaspers (138), Jackson Jaspers (144), Will Goodlove (157) and Tyler Williams (215) provided pins.
At Newton, Saturday, Dec. 2, Klayten Perreault (106), Jase Jaspers (138), Jackson Jaspers (144), Mikey Ryan (150), Will Goodlove (157), and Ethan Wood (285) won titles.
“We have some kids that can get some pins, and that helps us out a lot with team scoring,” Light said. “You get those bonus points.”
CJ Martin (113), Jackson Hird (165), Caysen Curran (190) were second at Newton.
The Mustangs wrestle a dual at Clear Creek Amana on Thursday, Dec. 7, then host the Mount Vernon Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 9.
