The fifth-ranked Mount Vernon girls’ basketball team picked up a pair of wins last week, beating Dubuque Hempstead, 65-39, and Grinnell, 65-22.
On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the Mustangs got out to a 16-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Junior post Chloe Meester led a balanced scoring effort with 14 points.
“Sometimes the game is simple,” Mount Vernon Coach Nate Sanderson said. “Throw it to the tallest player, and get out of the way.”
Sydney Huber had 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Peyton Simpson had 10 points and six assists. Brynley Rasmussen had nine points off the bench.
Then on Friday, Dec. 1, the defense put the clamps on the Tigers.
The Mustangs forced Grinnell into shooting just 25.8 percent from the floor and 27 turnovers. Of which Mount Vernon turned into 35 points.
Meester led the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds, for her first double-double of the season. Taylor Franck added a career-high 14 points, Huber and Simpson each had 10 points, and Eryn Jackson added eight.
Courtney Franck also made her presence known defensively with eight steals.
“We enjoyed our longest bus ride of the year,” Sandersons aid. “We used a 20-0 run to break the game open.”
Mount Vernon (3-0) hosted No. 2 Benton Community on Tuesday, Dec. 5. They travel to Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday, Dec. 8, and to Cedar Rapids Kennedy for a matinee Saturday.
