Lisbon wrestling opened the season with a pair of dual wins, then enjoyed a trip to the two-day Cliff Keen Independence Invitational.
On Monday, Nov. 27, the Lions downed North Mahaska, 44-33, and beat Northeast, 63-18.
Lisbon got 24 points in forfeits against North Mahaska, and 30 points against Northeast.
“North Mahaska has a good team,” Lisbon Coach Aaron Helmrich said. “Getting that win will look better and better as the season progresses.”
Gage Holub (165), Jonah Reiling (285) and Tiernan Boots (150) came up with pins to push the Lions over the top against the Warhawks.
Then the Lions wrestled at the two-day, 32-team Cliff Keen Independence Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Lisbon finished 15th with 171 team points. Alburnett won the event with 320.
The Lions were led by Reiling, who finished third at 285 pounds, and Boots, who was fourth at 150.
“We have a young team, and I think they wrestled well and got some much-needed experience,” Helmrich said. “Jonah and Tiernan were very focused every round and didn’t let the pressure of a two-day tournament get to them.”
Indy Ferguson (215) lost in his pool, so the highest he could finish was ninth, which he rallied to do, going 5-1 over the two days.
“He finished out the tournament the way he should’ve,” Helmrich said.
The Lions wrestle this week at Maquoketa Valley on Thursday, and then split the squad to wrestle at the Mount Vernon Invitational and the Springville Invitational on Saturday.
