What a fall for Mount Vernon and Lisbon athletic teams!
Mount Vernon football won its district and made It to the 3A quarterfinals. Mount Vernon volleyball was runner-up at state in 3A. MVL cross country placed second (girls) and eighth (boys) at state in 3A.
Lisbon football won its district and made it to the Round of 16 in Class A. Lisbon volleyball won 28 matches and made it to a Class 2A regional semifinals.
(As an aside, how are the Lions Class A for football and 2A for volleyball? I know the cutoffs are different, and the numbers change every year … but still weird.)
I know there are a lot of student-athletes upset with not finishing the season with a win … but so few teams get to do that.
I want to give a shoutout to Armstrong Field press box disc jockey Nathan Bednarczyk. The Cornell grad did a great job on Senior Night against Washington when the rain was pouring down the entire game.
Bednarczyk played most every rain-related song ever written during breaks in the action. It was impressive.
The year is 2088. High school football games are warming up across Iowa. AC/DC is playing.
I have a ton of respect for students who run cross country. Running a 5K as fast as you can is just above colonoscopy prep on things I enjoy doing.
But after shooting pictures at the finish line this fall … I’m not sure the kids are enjoying it much, either. It reminds me of what Clubber Lang predicted in Rocky III … “pain.”
Just to get it into the record, the team that eliminated Mount Vernon in football next eliminated Solon on Saturday in a Class 3A semifinal in the UNI-Dome. Williamsburg won, 45-14.
Williamsburg (11-1) takes on Sioux City Heelan (11-1) in the 3A championship Friday, Nov. 17.
Few quick hitters (thanks to @MVActivities on Twitter):
• MVL cross country coach Kory Swart was selected as an At-Large Coach of the Year for Class 3A girls by the IATC.
• Addison Gookin signed with Winona State to play softball last Wednesday.
Gookin was a first-team all-state pick.
“We are incredibly excited to have a player of Addison’s caliber join the softball family here at Winona State,” Coach Greg Jones said online.
• Mount Vernon students Aleece Lee and Cora Wheeler competed with the Cedar Rapids Washington swimming team at the state meet this weekend. Lee swam in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays, and Wheeler in the medley and 200 freestyle relays.
A fall to remember
