Sophomore goalkeeper Sabrina Ibanez broke Cornell’s single-season record for saves in Saturday’s 7-0 women’s soccer loss to Midwest Conference champion Lake Forest on Senior Day.
In her 14th and final match of the fall, Ibanez racked up 16 saves to become the program’s new record-holder with 150. The San Diego, Calif., native topped the previous mark of 138 saves, set by Shawna Becker in 2006.
This was Ibanez’s eighth match with double-digit saves this season. She registered eight saves in each half against the Foresters (9-3-5 overall), who wrapped up the MWC regular-season title with a 7-0-1 mark.
Cornell (1-10-3 overall, 1-7 MWC) recognized its five senior players prior to the match in Maricruz Hernandez, India Smith, Amelia Brown, Kara Rivard and Brynn Schierenbeck. They all started the contest.
Kylie Hard, Krystin Kamrath and Elissafe Moreno each attempted one shot for the Rams, who held Lake Forest scoreless for the opening 20 minutes. The Foresters struck for three goals in the first half and added four more in the second.
Earlier in the week, the women picked upa 2-0 loss to Illinois College.
The Rams created scoring opportunities with seven shots on goal, four coming from junior Kylie Hard. The team received two shots apiece from Gwen Westervelt, Amelia Brown and Krystin Kamrath.
Goalkeeper Sabrina Ibanez worked all 90 minutes and moved within four saves of Cornell’s single-season record. The sophomore stopped four shots from the Lady Blues and bumped her season total to 134.
Illinois College (6-8-2 overall, 2-3-2 MWC) caught the Rams (1-9-3 overall, 1-6 MWC) with a quick initial goal 16 seconds into the match.
The score held at 1-0 until the 74th minute, when the Lady Blues converted a penalty kick.
