What a gorgeous new facility and opening celebration for the Martha Parsons Family Activity Complex and Armstrong Family Field.
It was definitely a busy, busy Thursday and Friday at the new facility at Mount Vernon High School, but there was plenty to highlight the new facility Friday night for that homecoming win for the Mount Vernon Mustangs.
The parade went by without a hitch and there was an electricity in the air ahead of coronation. Then seeing those stands full for the opening ceremonies, with the Parsons and Armstrong families recognized as significant donors to the project.
There were countless other areas of the field that had donors that make for pretty exciting features as well, including recognition of the longtime voice of the Mustangs Dave Ryan and the flag pole dedicated in memory of the late Dean Borg.
Even listening to the discussion at Monday’s city council between the parks and recreation commission and the police department of how traffic was impacted in neighboring Stonebrook and the facility itself and how quickly traffic was able to disperse following the conclusion of the game, it seems like the work before hand succeeded in addressing some of those areas of concern for public safety.
But mostly, what a way to open that facility with so many different groups having a chance to participate on the field – from the cheer clinic leading their cheers on the new track, powderpuff football having their annual game after coronation, cheerleaders performing some of the first cheers on the field and the Marching Mustangs performing the National Anthem and “Immortal” at the halftime show, and the Mustang football team getting that first win.
It truly is a fantastic facility that will serve multiple activities for years to come in the Mount Vernon community.
