The Linn County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) dedicated two new Lincoln Highway kiosks this week. The kiosks located in Lisbon and at the local Iowa State Patrol headquarters in Cedar Rapids needed replacing due to age and damage sustained during storms. The Lisbon kiosk was funded jointly by the Linn County HPC and the following local groups: the Lisbon Historic Preservation Commission and the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group.
Members of Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group, Lisbon Historic Preservation Commission, Mount Vernon Historic Preservation Commission, Lincoln Highway National Heritage Byway, Linn County Historic Preservation Commission, MV-LCDG and Lisbon City officials were at the dedication Friday, Oct. 5, in downtown Lisbon.
A similar panel was also recently installed in Mount Vernon near the Ash Park football field to replace a similar panel that resided there in the past.
“This panel — and the new panel in Mount Vernon — is a collaborative project involving the Lisbon Historic Preservation Commission, the Mount Vernon Historic Preservation Commission, the Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Development Group, the Linn County Historic Preservation Commission, and the cities of Lisbon and Mount Vernon,” said Amelia Kibbie, member of the Lisbon Historic Preservation Commission.
Kibbie explained that the panel in Lisbon is one of eight replacement panels created to share the historical importance and nostalgic wonder of the Lincoln Highway. Lisbon’s interpretive sign is titled “A Highway to Honor Lincoln.”
“The sign’s beauty lies not only in its artistic merit and quality construction, but also in its egalitarian design,” Kibbie said. “It is accessible to anyone, resident or visitor, and can be easily reached by those with mobility issues. Lisbon students will certainly pass it on their tours of our downtown historic district as well as on their way to and from school, extending their learning outside the classroom. Perhaps now this park will be known by its true name, Lincoln Square, and not simply referred to as ‘the gazebo.’”
