Mount Vernon-Lisbon cross country enjoyed a sweep of team titles at the West Delaware Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
“That was a really good meet for us,” MVL Coach Kory Swart said. “I think it was a big confidence boost for what is ahead of us.”
And now things get serious. The next two races are conference, and the state qualifier.
“We’re excited for the Wamac meet,” Swart said. “It shows where we are, and is always competitive.”
At the Hart Ridge Golf Course in Manchester, the Lisbon boys won with 72 points, led by Grady Olberding, who won the individual crown in 16:07.6.
“He just looked really calm and under control in that race,” Swart said. “When he is on, he’s tough to beat.”
Olberding was followed by Dawson Scheil (sixth), who set a personal best, Kayten Perreault (12th), Wesley Sadler (19th) and Seamus O’Connor (34th), to round out the scoring.
“Dawson ran one of his best races of the year,” Swart said. “He was very aggressive and it paid huge dividends.”
The girls won with 67 points, outpacing Tipton (93) and Marion (105).
Scoring for the girls was Kiersten Swart (fifth), Eastin Whisner (seventh), Emrie Johnson (12th), Evelyn Moeller (13th) and Abbie Moss (30th).
Coach Swart said that Johnson had a “breakthrough” race for the Mustangs, finishing in 20 minutes, 43.2 seconds.
“She was a difference-maker for us,” Swart said. “She had been struggling at times this year. She wants to help the team as much as possible.”
Swart also highlighted Miranda Sellner, who won the JV girls race, and Graham Varicek, who was second in JV boys.
The Wamac Meet is Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Antioch Christian Church in Marion.
