Little Scratch Coffee Hatch has expanded hours for their walk-up window in uptown Mount Vernon. The shop now has hours Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Mondays. Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays the shop is open 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Co-owner Katrina Anderson said she and her husband, Joel, had explored several different locations for the possible coffee shop in uptown Mount Vernon before settling on a portion of the old Shepley Pharmacy.
“The windowed portion of this shop was where we just saw a lot of potential,” Anderson said. “It allows us to offer a walk-up coffee window for people, as well as a devoted space for our coffee grinders.”
The couple formerly ran a coffee business known as Wake Up Iowa, before they opened Little Scratch Coffee Hatch.
“We were a frequent contributor to numerous farmers markets over the years, but we were really looking for our own retail space,” Anderson said.
The shop still offers beans for Bon Appetit at Cornell College and Gary’s Foods in Mount Vernon, and when they were looking to move into their retail space, finding space for the roasters for the fresh roasted coffee beans was most important.
Opening the walk-up window has been the next item, with that first officially opening on Mondays in August. A soft opening was held during Nitty Gritty Antiques Festival in early July of that space. As school has started, Little Scratch Coffee Hatch has extended the hours for the coffee window.
The next items on the agenda are for later this fall or early winter – looking to host coffee workshops or tastings in the retail space to get people more familiar with the different blends of coffee.
“As the temperatures wind down, we’re also looking to open our indoor retail space more often as well,” Anderson said. “Our remodel isn’t quite ready for that added traffic right at the moment, but we’re happy to see customers come for beans and fresh brewed coffees at the window.”
On top of the brews, they also offer baked goods from The Local Crumb.
