The Mount Vernon Marching Mustangs are off to a great start for the season.
The Marching Mustangs placed first out of nine bands in Class 3A at the Bands Across the Prairie event this past Saturday, with a score of 76.60. The band also took best percussion and people’s choice award home from the competition.
Earlier in the season, the Mustangs placed six out of 11 bands at Linn-Mar, with a score of 75.4. While the band was minorly disappointed with that outcome, director Scott Weber said they were motivated and would bounce back.
And bounce back they did. The band placed third at competition that same evening at Marion with a score of 78.7. The band also received the best drum majors in all of class 3A and best percussion accolades.
Coming this weekend, the Marching Mustangs will be competing at the state Marching Band Competition in Cedar Rapids-Washington, with a performance time of 11:10 a.m. They will also be competing at Muscatine at 6:30 p.m. the same evening.
The band will also take part in the Hwy. 1 Marching Band Classic in Solon Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m.
Their final performance for the season will be Saturday, Oct. 14, when they perform at Waukee.
