School board candidate forum Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.Thank you to all the candidates running for elected office in Mount Vernon and Lisbon. Your willingness to offer your time and talents for public service is applauded.
We urge all voters to become informed before they go to the polls on November 7. Most local races are uncontested with the exception of the Mount Vernon School Board. It may be challenging to decide among the 10 candidates running for the school board openings in Mount Vernon. To help voters put faces to names and learn what each stands for, we urge you to attend our Candidates’ Forum of School Board Candidates on October 25, 7 p.m. in the Mount Vernon High School Commons. Watch for our ad in next week’s newspaper for more details
Early voting will be available from Oct. 18 – Nov. 6 at the Jean Oxley Public Service Center (Linn County Adm. Bldg.) and at Lindale Mall. Check with Auditor’s Office for times.

Embracing old
traditions with new:
A poem in remembrance
of First Street Field A new era has begun. The Martha Parsons and Family Activity Complex is the new home for Mustang football, track, soccer and physical education, with band and other groups sure to take advantage of it.
As a school board member, retired teacher, coach, para and alumnus, I’m proud to see a bright future for the Mount Vernon Community School District.
When I think back to my high school years and time as a Mustang football player, truly, one of the most memorable memories is our walk from the locker room to the field. Looking down and over the field and crowd with my teammates left a lasting impression.
Let us not forget, but let us also embrace traditions old and new. I hope this poem has meaning for those who took the field.
Path to the field How many walked this path?
A descending mass of maroon
And white
Prepared to put up a valiant fight.
Echoes from the stands
Cheering us downward
Captains leading the way
Hoping we’re ready
to win the day
This ritual
A rite of passage
For those who
Put on the pads,
Put in the work
Paid their dues.
We came together
United as a team
That walk to the field.
Every Mustangs dream!
