You know who was pretty busy during the Lisbon homecoming game against Wapello? PAT kicker Gage Holub, who attempted 10 extra points (making 8).
You know who wasn’t busy? Well, also Holub, who punts for the Lions. He had no attempts.
Lisbon Coach Dylan Hastings complimented his junior kicker/punter.
“We are very fortunate to have a weapon like him,” Hastings said. “Our kickoff team has it easy, all the touchbacks he has. He’s an asset and helps us get great field position.”
No. 4 Lisbon scored on its first nine offensive possessions and bullied Wapello, 68-0, on Friday at Walmer Field.
“It was nice,” Hastings said. “Against Pekin, our offense and defense were not quite clicking as much as we had been. It was the goal of our team to get back to clicking.”
Oh, Lisbon clicked, all right.
The clicking Lions outgained the Indians 365 yards to 37, and had 22 first downs to 2.
“We got back to what we do best, our base defense,” Hastings said.
Hastings complimented his defensive front for controlling the line of scrimmage. And that starts with 6-foot-4, 280-pound senior nose tackle Jonah Reiling. He is committed to play college football at North Dakota.
“He does take up a lot of space,” Hastings said. “A lot of time he is getting double- or triple-teamed, but he’s doing his job.”
At defensive ends are seniors Indiana Ferguson (5-9, 230) and Blake Harms (6-0, 280).
“Those guys are all seniors and guys who have come up through the system,” Hastings said. “They are strong and physical and they can occupy most offensive lines.”
The big fellas work in tandem with middle linebacker Matthias Kohl, also a senior.
“He will scrape over the top and make the tackle,” Hastings said. “His mentality and vision are quite good.”
Wapello (1-5, 1-4 Class A District 5) finished with minus-6 yards of rushing.
The Indians knew it was going to be a long evening when, on their first drive, Dakota Clark intercepted the football and returned it for a touchdown.
Ryder Meeks added an interception later in the game, and Tiernan Boots and Blake Harms had fumble recoveries.
Offensively, the Lions took what they wanted. Dakota Clark finished with 88 rushing yards and 81 passing yards. Henry Neymeyer had 82 rushing yards on just four carries, and Baylor Speidel had 74 rushing yards on just seven carries.
“We ran the ball when we needed to, and spread it out when we needed to,” Hastings said.
Next up for Lisbon (6-0, 5-0) is another long bus ride down south to take on Danville (4-2, 4-1).
The Bears are playing football again after seven years of not having a program. And they are faring pretty well, all things considered.
“They are a good team,” Hastings said. “We can tell they are well-coached.
“Danville is known for basketball, and a lot of them are taller than six foot,” Hastings said.
