How sweep it is.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon swept the varsity and junior varsity team titles Monday, Sept. 18, at the Solon Invitational at the Solon Recreation Area.
“We really celebrated,” MVL Coach Kory Swart said. “We won all four levels, JV and varsity girls and boys. Pretty exciting for us, for sure.”
The Mustangs were coming off a week with no competitions, which gave them the chance to have some tougher workouts.
“We are getting ourselves better prepared,” Swart said. “You want to peak at the right time. It allowed us a great opportunity for improvement. We’ll see in a couple of week it really help us out.”
The schedule remains busy for the rest of the season.
After a trip to the Williamsburg Invitational, which features Pella, one of the top programs in Class 3A this season, on Tuesday (after the paper went to press), the Mustangs have the mega-event Saturday at Wartburg College.
“It is a big one,” Swart said. “Schools from all over the place. A super fast, super competitive meet with a lot of great teams, a lot of great runners.’
It features around “50 total” schools.
It’ll be different from the eight-team event in Solon.
The MVL girls won the varsity race with 54 points, topping second-place Solon by 15 points.
Kiersten Swart led the girls with a third-place finish in 19:50.0. Also scoring for the Mustangs were Eastin Whisner (fifth), Evelyn Moeller (seventh), Maeve Krogmann (19th) and Emrie Johnson (20th).
Coach Swart had heaps of praise for Edith Dawson, who won the JV race, and for Cora Smith, who finished third in the JV race.
“That was a massive improvement for her,” Swart said. “Her best last season was 25:19. She ran 22:15. She is knocking on the door of varsity.
“Its fun to see that progress with kids that have been putting in the hard work.”
The varsity boys won with 43 points, topping Solon by 18 points. Grady Olberding won the race in 16:01.0.
Also scoring for the Mustangs were Dawson Scheil (seventh), Klayten Perreault (eighth), Wesley Sadler (10th) and Seamus O’Connor (17th).
Swart noted that Chasen Caskey and Stratton Ellyson finished 1-2 in the boys’ JV race.
“That was also a performance that really stood out,” Swart said.
