Lisbon volleyball keeps racking up wins, and some fun career honors, as they roll through the season.
This week the Lions topped Calamus-Wheatland on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23, to put them in the driver’s seat for a Tri-County Conference title.
“We’ve won six conference championships in a row, and theses girls don’t want to be the group that ends that,” Lisbon Coach Lance Kamaus said. “So that was a big one.”
It was also the match in which senior libero Addy Happel got her 1,000th career dig, recording 23 that night.
Historic on defense, and impressive on offense. Senior Ava Czarnecki had 30 kills and a .429 attack efficiency to pace Lisbon (19-5, 3-0). Sophomore Mykala Luzum-Selmon had 21 kills and a .309 efficiency.
“Ava had a really strong night offensively,” Kamaus said. “Mykala had a ton, too.”
Kamaus said the Lions were helped by a change in the serving rotation. Luzum-Selmon served 24-of-26 and Kamryn Kahl was 22-of-22. They had nine aces as a team, three from Happel.
In addition, Lisbon had just 12 attack errors and hit .297. Junior setter Kaitlynn Hasselbusch had 54 assists.
Calamus-Wheatland fell to 14-6, 2-1. Except the Lions, now no other team in the Tri-Rivers East is unbeaten in East Division play.
Near the bottom of the standings is Midland (2-19, 1-2), and the Lions rolled through them Thursday, 25-5, 25-12, 25-10.
“We came out really hot,” Kamaus said. “We were able to move some kids around and still finish really strong.”
Because of that, it was a more balanced night offensively. Luzum-Selmon led the team in kills with 13, followed by Czarnecki with 10. Addi Petersen had four and Kamryn Kahl had three. Lisbon hit .400 as a team with zero attack errors.
Hasselbusch had 26 assists and Happel led with 12 digs.
Lisbon finished the busy week by going 4-1 at the South Tama Invitational.
The Lions beat Perry (21-8, 21-6), East Marshall (21-8, 21-6), South Tama (21-15, 17-21, 15-8) and Grinnell (18-21, 21-10, 15-9) but lost to No. 9 (3A) Mid-Prairie (21-14, 21-19).
Another milestone was reached during the tournament, with Czarnecki collecting the 1,000th kill of her career.
She will be honored Thursday during the home match against Marquette. Also being honored that night will be 2022-23 Gazette Athlete of the Year, Peyton Robinson.
It is also homecoming week, and youth night.
“There will be around 75 campers there,” Kamaus said. “The concession stand will be selling out of Airheads. It’ll be fun in the gym, that’s for sure.”
Lisbon started this week playing at No. 13 (2A) Regina on Tuesday. After the Marquette home match, they travel to Prince of Peace on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
