No. 4 Lisbon scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff Friday against Highland, then found the end zone seven more times before halftime and rolled to a 57-6 victory.
Quinn Coleman scored on a 60-yard scamper just eight seconds into the game.
“Their kicker likes to pop it up, we saw on film,” Lisbon coach Dylan Hastings said. “Our special team coordinator had a special scheme set up. Find a seam and go. It worked out like we repped it.”
The Lions got another special team touchdown when Michael Gadberry recovered a Highland fumble during kickoff coverage and carried it 30 yards for a touchdown. That made it 28-0 with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter.
“He used our defensive technique,” Hastings said of Gadberry, who is out for football for the first time. “Any opportunity to rip the ball out. He knew what to do with it once he got it in his hands.”
Lisbon also got rushing touchdowns from Baylor Speidel (2), Quinn Coleman and Henry Neymeyer, and a touchdown pass from Dakota Clark to Gage Holub to make it 54-0 at the half. Speidel finished with 133 rushing yards on eight carries.
Lisbon (4-0, 3-0 Class A District 5) outscored Highland 57 to 6, and outgained them 295 yards to 104. And those numbers were skewed by the continuous clock the entire second half.
The Huskies fell to 0-4, and have been outscored 156 to 46 so far this season. Despite those numbers, Lisbon remained focused.
“The boys were locked in all week,” Hastings said. “High school boys, they are on Twitter, reading the paper, checking the rankings. We made sure they were focused on the task at hand.
“We preach every week that we can’t be looking into the future. And the boys have really bought into that.”
Next up is another big district road trip to Pekin on Friday. The Panthers (3-1, 2-1) lost at Columbus, 56-24, last week. For reference, Lisbon won at Columbus, 34-28, in Week 3.
“Pekin is doing some things different than they have in the past,” Hastings said. “They are throwing it more this year. They’ve got some quick kids.”
