No. 2 (3A) Mount Vernon stayed cool in a high-pressure environment last Monday, sweeping the 12th-ranked (3A) Spartans 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 in Solon.
“Any time we play Solon, especially on the road, it is a different level of a match,” Mount Vernon coach Maggie Willems said. “I was very pleased with our ability to handle the loud environment. Our student bodies got after it.”
Willems said the sweep might make it look easy, but it was not. The Mustangs trailed 23-22 in the third set, but came out of a time out and “took care of business.”
Chloe Meester led the attack with 19 kills. Brooke Ellyson added 11 kills and Paige Schurbon had six. Sydney Huber had 37 assists and Meester led with 16 digs. Jaden Rolland added 12 digs and Ellyson had nine.
The Mustangs had 10 aces in the match, with three each from Eryn Jackson, Ellyson and Meester.
Mount Vernon hosts Williamsburg on Thursday night.
