After beating Durant and Louisa-Muscatine by a combined score of 97-0, things got a little bit tougher in week three for the No. 4 Lisbon Lions.
But Lisbon still improved to 3-0, beating Columbus 34-28 on Friday in Columbus Junction.
“Very eventful,” Lisbon coach Dylan Hasting said. “We went though some adversity, but did a great job on the whole.”
Considering the first two games had a lot of continuous clocks in the second half, it was a new (bad) feeling to be trailing in the fourth quarter.
Columbus scored on a 42-yard run by Riley Kaalberg with 4:40 to play to go ahead, 28-27.
“I told the kids we’ve got a lot of time left on the clock,” Hastings said. “We’re not out of this.”
The Lions responded with a 7-play, 59-yard drive, capping it off with a 4-yard touchdown by Baylor Spiedel, who finished with 277 rushing yards on 22 carries.
“Sure enough, we were able to drive it down,” Hastings said. “I actually would’ve liked to milk (the clock) a little longer.”
But Columbus got the ball back with 1:38 to play and got down to the Lisbon 21 with 9 seconds left.
Reid Fridley broke up the first pass attempt, then Tiernan Boots came up with the game-clinching interception.
“Henry Neymeyer was able to hit the quarterback as he thew it and Boots did a good job of making a play,” Hastings said.
Lisbon was able to leave town still undefeated, but gave up 391 rushing yards to the Wildcats. Kaden Amigon had 320 on 42 carries and Kaalberg added 69 on 16.
“They are big and strong,” Hastings said. “They are good at what they do.”
It was a good test for the Lions with a trip to Pekin in two weeks.
“We had not played a full four-quarter game,” Hastings said. “It was good to get four quarters out of our guys.”
Lisbon hosts Highland (0-3) on Friday at Walmer Field.
