The Mount Vernon Mustangs picked up a 33-0 win against Union Friday, Sept. 1, played at Union High School Football field.
The Mustangs and Union both failed to cross the endzone in the first quarter of the game.
Jonah Williams rushed four yards to the endzone in the second quarter to place the Mustangs on the board.
The extra point attempt by Bennett Harp was good to leave the score 7 to 0 at halftime.
Rhomberg kept the ball on two drives in the third quarter, one a 39-yard rush and the other a 4 yard rush. The point after attempts on each were not good, leaving the score 19-0 at the end of the third inning.
Evan Brase crossed the endzone first in the fourth quarter on a 37-yard pass from Rhomberg. The extra point from Harp was good.
Cole Thurn grabbed a 21-yard pass from Kellen Haverback in the endzone for another Mustang touchdown. The extra point from Harp was also good, leaving the Mustangs 33-0 in the game.
Rhomberg completed 26 passes on 39 attempts in the game, advancing the ball 199 yards. Brase was Rhomberg’s favorite pass target, with Brase drawing down the ball for 82 yards and one touchdown.
Hird was the rushing leader, advancing the ball down the field 99 yards in his 17 rushes. Rhomberg held on to the ball for eight rushes, advancing the ball 22 yards and crossing the endzone twice.
The Mustangs had a total of 33 tackles on defense, led by Jackson Jaspers with 5, Miles Francois with 4.5 and Ethan Plotz with 4.
The Mustangs will face off at home this Friday against the Benton Bobcats at First Street Community Center Field.
