Cornell College had an extended move-in this week, due to high heat conditions.
Move-in date for freshman students was originally planned for Wednesday, Aug. 23, but temperatures sizzled to more than 100 degrees on that day.
“We did have some students who were unable to shift their move-in plans, and those students were still able to move in on Wednesday,” said Jill Hawk, communications director for Cornell College. “Those students had earlier move-in times to help beat the heat.”
Faculty and staff pulled together to support two move-in days by volunteering extra hours.
“We have several air-conditioned buildings around campus that are open to students 24/7 as cooling centers, and students were notified about those locations,” Hawk said. “Students living in any of the four residence halls without air conditioning were provided options for a cool place to sleep if they wanted one.”
There are also multiple water stations around campus, and Bon Appétit gave out ice cream and popsicles to students during move-in.
Meetings with advisors and other staff that are usually held in person shifted to Zoom for those students who were unable to move in Wednesday.
The rest of the 350 new students moving in, started arriving early Friday, Aug. 25.
Cornell athletes, including members of the football team, helped offload items from vehicles and carry them to dorm rooms for new students.
“Where the fridges at?” one of the Cornell students joked as he came to move another dorm fridge into a room.
Water stations were set up around the outside of the dormitories, and sprinklers and water balloons were also present to help keep those helping with move-in cool in the heat.
“The goal was for this to remain as fun and welcoming as possible to the new members of the Ram family,” Hawk said.
