If you have an adult family member living with serious mental illness, that can upend your life, too. That’s why NAMI—National Alliance on Mental Illness—created NAMI Family-to-Family to give tools and support to help loved ones with mental health conditions.
This free eight-week educational course, developed by NAMI to help family members of adults living with mental illness, will be offered in person and online by NAMI Linn County beginning Sept. 11.
Delivered by trained facilitators who offer lived experience, the evidence-based NAMI Family-to-Family curriculum includes the following:
- Up-to-date information on mental health conditions and how they affect the brain
- Current treatments, including evidence-based therapies, medications, and side effects
- How to manage crises, solve problems, and communicate effectively
- How to develop empathy, confidence, and stamina to provide support with compassion
Course materials, discussions, and exercises examine the biological origins of mental illness. Helpingcond family members separate the illness from the individual. NAMI Family-to-Family will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. for eight Mondays beginning Sept. 11, ending Oct. 30. Advance registration is required by Sept. 7.
