Our second StoryWalk is up and ready! What is a StoryWalk?
A StoryWalk is a children’s book whose pages are put on signboards along a walking trail. In addition to the pages of the book, there are activities and questions to deepen your experience as you read and walk. Our current StoryWalk is Mo Willems’ The Pigeon Has to Go to School, a funny story to prepare children for their first days of school.
This new StoryWalk begins at the bottom of Library Lane, which leads to Mount Vernon’s public library and ends at Washington Elementary School — connecting two essential institutions for student success. We send out a big thank you to the households along the StoryWalk trail who were excited to be a part of this project! The StoryWalk is sponsored by Hills Bank, Cole Public Library, and the Mount Vernon School Library.
The StoryWalk project was started in Vermont in 2007 by a chronic disease specialist who was looking for a way to encourage community members to be more active. Since then, StoryWalks have grown in popularity throughout the United States and beyond. To librarians, a StoryWalk is about more than being active; it is also about supporting family literacy and helping to grow a child’s love of reading. So put on your walking shoes, head to Library Lane, and enjoy the StoryWalk!
