Lisbon native earns doctorate
On August 2, 2023, Dr. John Sawatzky successfully defended his thesis to earn his PhD in pure mathematics from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. John is the son of David and Marcia Sawatzky of Lisbon.
John was homeschooled and earned his bachelor of science in mathematics from Iowa State University in 2017. While at ISU, he was the top math student both his junior and senior years. Because of Iowa State’s math department’s strong professional working relationship with the University of Waterloo in Canada, John chose to attend there for his graduate degree beginning in 2017. His first year at Waterloo saw him earn his master’s degree, followed by commencing work on his PhD. In the spring of 2020, he was hired as an adjunct instructor of mathematics at Cornell College for the 2020-2021 school year. He then returned to the University of Waterloo to finish his PhD studies. Some of his freshman students at Cornell will be graduating this coming spring in the class of 2024.
John has accepted a position to teach at the University of Missouri-Kansas City beginning in this coming 2023-24 school year.
