The Mount Vernon varsity softball team won all four of its games last week, improving to 25-9 overall, and are tops in the East Division of the WaMaC Conference at 16-4. Solon is second at 13-5 (22-13 overall).
Monday, June 26The Mustangs notched their first two wins in a doubleheader at South Tama. Mount Vernon won, 12-0 and 22-0.
Wednesday, June 28 Mount Vernon narrowly defeated the West Delaware Hawks, 3-1 and 4-1.
“They were two great wins,” said head coach Robin Brand.
Game one
The Mustangs held a slight 2-1 edge following the first inning, and there would be only one more run scored for the remainder of the game. The team tacked one a single run in the third, and escaped with a 3-1 win.
Addison Gookin had two RBIs in the contest, and younger sister Hayden Gookin was awarded the win as pitcher, throwing for seven innings, and striking out nine Hawks.
Game two The Mustangs took the second contest 4-1.
Olivia Haverback and Hayden Gookin had the team’s two RBIs, while Gookin again pitched. The younger of the Gookins pitched two innings, and struck out three.
