The Mustang boys picked up four losses on the week, in games against Linn Mar, Benton and Anamosa. It wasn’t all gloom for the Mustangs though, as they picked up two wins against Vinton-Shellsburg to lead the week off.
Monday, June 19Game one
Mount Vernon earned the win against Vinton-Shellsburg in a 10-3 outing Monday, June 19.
Mount Vernon was first on the scoreboard, hammering three runs in the first two innings. Vinton-Shellsburg had one run at the bottom of the second. The Mustangs hammered home another seven in the fourth and fifth innings, and Vinton-Shellsburg knocked home two more in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Eric Lamb, Michael Ryan and Cole Thurn had two runs each, and solo runs were had by Colin Bentley, Nolan Jackson, Ethan Wood and Ryne Moeller.
A.J. McDermott picked up the win, with five innings with three hits, three runs and five strikeouts. He also had five base on balls in the win.
Game two The Mustangs also took the nightcap, going 3-0 against Vinton-Shellsburg.
The Mustangs scores came in the first and second innings.
Bentley was the lead scorer for the mustangs, earning two of the runs for the Mustangs. Tait Rentschler rounded the bases once.
Ryne Moeller earned the win, pitching seven innings. He had two hits, two base on balls and four strikeouts in the appearance.
Wednesday, June 21 Linn-Mar ran over the Mustangs in an 11-1 victory Wednesday, June 21.
The Mustangs only run came in the fifth inning. Linn-Mar pounded home six of their runs in the first four innings, and five in the fifth inning.
Thurn was the lone scorer for the Mustangs. Bentley and Jackson had two hits, and Lamb and Garet Swartzenruber had solo hits in the game.
Austin Mercer pitched three innings with two hits, five runs, three base on balls and one strikeout. Ethan Wood pitched two innings, with three hits, one run and two strikeouts. Miles Francois pitched for a solo inning, with six runs and two hits.
Thursday, June 22Game one
Benton topped Mount Vernon 6-5 in the first of a doubleheader Thursday, June 22.
Benton lobbed four of their runs in the first four innings of the game. Mount Vernon’s solo run came in the seventh inning, while Benton added two more in that inning.
Thurn crossed the plate once for the Mustangs. Jackson and Wood had two hits each, while Ryan and Thurn had one hit each.
Maddox Rollinger earned the loss, pitching six innings with six hits, four runs, three strike outs.
Game two
Benton also took the nightcap, going 1-0 over the Mustangs.
Benton’s solo home run came in the first inning.
Bentley and Moeller had solo hits for the Mustangs in the loss.
Jackson took the loss, pitching six innings with five hits, one runs, four base on balls and two strikeouts.
Friday, June 25Anamosa took a win against Mount Vernon 5-4 Friday, June 24.
Anamosa was first on the scoreboard, with one run in the first inning. The Mustangs answered back with four runs in the fifth inning. Anamosa tied the game up at the bottom of the fifth inning, and added one more run in the seventh inning.
Swartzendruber was the leading hitter for the Mustangs, with two hits in the outing. The Mustangs had runs from Bentley, Jackson, Wood and Thurn in the loss.
Landon Wilson pitched the most innings for the Mustangs, with four innings pitched with four hits, four runs, one base on balls and one strikeout. Ethan Wood pitched an inning giving up one hit, one run and two strikeouts.
