Mount Vernon school board member Dr. Lori Merlak will be giving her 30-day notice at the July school board meeting to resign from the board in August.
She announced her plans at the June 12 school board meeting.
Merlak’s current school board seat will then be vacant in the November school board election, along with four other seats on the board.
Merlak has been on the school board for 10 years—since 2013—including serving as vice president and president.
This spring both of her children graduated from the schools they were attending—her daughter from college, and her son from high school. Both are graduates of Mount Vernon High School.
Merlak can’t rent a house in Mount Vernon because of the expense, she said, so she will soon be going elsewhere to live. Sale of her current house in Mount Vernon will close in early August.
She will give her 30-day notice in mid-July to vacate her position on the school board in August.
The board will publish notice of the vacancy after Merlak’s resignation is official.
The school board is aiming to then have a new board member selected by appointment and on the board by mid-August to serve through this coming October.
That person would then be able to run in the November school board election for a two-year term on the board.
