Like superintendent Autumn Pino noted in an interview, this summer already seems to be flying by.
We have construction projects in both Lisbon and Mount Vernon, with water main improvements in Lisbon and the resurfacing of Palisades Road getting underway. That’s not to mention the Iowa Department of Transportation’s work on Hwy. 1 north of Mount Vernon.
Then, there’s the building construction projects. Cornell College has a number of projects that are being tackled this summer. We have the new construction for Lisbon’s weight room and career technical education classroom space that was just approved that will most likely start in August. Work continues on the athletic field at Mount Vernon Schools. Mount Vernon Lisbon Police Department’s renovation work also continues.
And we have had three groups in Mount Vernon attending national competitions – the archery team just returned from the world competition in the past few weeks, the Mount Vernon Marching Mustangs were at Washington, D.C., and now the Mount Vernon High School cast of “Lend Me A Tenor” takes their terrific show to the International Thespian Stage in Indianapolis this week to entertain audiences of 1,400 or more.
And just around the corner are the next couple of summer festivals, with Lincoln Highway Nitty Gritty and Heritage Days just two weeks away.
That’s not even getting into the phenomenal seasons our area baseball and softball teams are having on the field again, or the countless programs at Southeast Linn Community Center giving kids something to do and learn over their summer vacations.
It gets to be old hat and kind of rote, but there is a lot to do and marvel at in these two communities all year round, not just the summer. But it sure seems like the days are flying by.
