Mount Vernon baseball picked up three wins and two losses on the week’s contests, splitting a contest with Clear Creek-Amana, losing to Cedar Rapids Washington and then winning over Williamsburg in a doubleheader.
Monday, June 12The team first took on Clippers on Clear Creek-Amana’s home turf, going 1-1 in a doubleheader.
Game One
The Clippers took the first game by a score of 5-0. The home team scored a run in the second and third innings before tacking on three more in the fourth, cruising to a five-point win.
Nolan Jackson provided a hit in the game, but it wasn’t enough of a spark to ignite the Mustang offense.
Ryne Moeller suffered the loss, throwing for five innings and striking out three.
Game Two Mount Vernon bounced back in the second game with the Clippers, scoring three runs in the first inning, another in the second, and four more in the third before Clear Creek-Amana got in on the action with a run in the fourth, and four more in the fifth.
However, the runs kept coming for the Mustangs, and they traveled back home with a 12-5 win.
Colin Bentley produced three hits in the win, along with a home run and two RBIs.
Tait Rentschler had just one hit, but it scored three of his teammates.
Maddox Rollinger drummed up two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
Nolan Jackson captured the win on the mound, pitching two innings and fanning two.
Wednesday, June 14 The Mustangs tied with the visiting Cedar Rapids Washington in the second inning at two apiece before Washington dropped four runs on them in third, and another five in the fourth. A further Mustang run put the game at 11-3 before Washington scored twice more in the fifth to put the game away at 13-3.
Nolan Jackson and Michael Ryan provided the Mustangs with the team’s two RBIs in the game.
Maddox Rollinger had two hits, one of which was a double.
Austin Mercer absorbed the loss on the mound, pitching two and two-thirds innings and striking out two batters.
Thursday, June 15Game one
The Mustangs chalked one more for the wins column against Williamsburg, nabbing a 5-2 victory Thursday, June 15 at Mount Vernon.
Mount Vernon was first on the scoreboard, adding one run in the third inning. They hammered home two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Williamsburg got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth and one more in the seventh.
Ryne Moeller hammered home two of the Mustangs runs, with Cole Thurn, Ryan and Jaspers each having one.
Maddox Rollinger was the winning pitcher, going seven innings with three strikeouts in the matchup.
Game two
The Mustangs held on for the second win in the doubleheader, getting a 5-3 win against Williamsburg.
The Mustangs were first on the scoreboard with one run in the first inning. Williamsburg hammered home two runs in the second inning, taking the lead. The Mustangs tied the game in the third inning with another run and then took the lead in the fourth with another run. They added a security run in the fifth inning after Williamsburg added one more run themselves in that inning. The Mustangs had one more run in the sixth inning.
Bentley had three runs in the Mustangs outing, with Jaspers and Ryan providing one each.
Nolan Jackson pitched 5 and two third innings for the Mustangs, earning three strikeouts. Ninth grader Nolan Wilson provided one and two third innings relief as pitcher in the game.
