The Mount Vernon Mustangs had a week filled with tough competitors, facing off against Williamsburg, North Polk and ADM. Over the course of the week, they earned five wins and three losses in the games they played.
Monday, June 12Game one
Mount Vernon earned a 3-1 win against Clear Creek-Amana.
Mount Vernon was first on the scoreboard with a run in the third inning. They followed that with additional single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Clear Creek-Amana added one at the top of the sixth inning.
Lilly See, Hayden Gookin and Courtney Franck led hits with two each in the game. See, Kameron Brand and Abbie Moss rounded the bases for the Mustangs in the win.
Hayden Gookin was the winning pitcher, earning eight strikeouts, one base on balls and nine hits in her showing.
Game two
The Mustangs galloped over Clear Creek Amana in the nightcap, winning 10-1.
Mount Vernon got out to an early lead, knocking five runs between the first and second innings. Clear Creek added their solo run in the fourth inning. The Mustangs knocked home five more security runs in the seventh inning to take the 10-1 win.
Addison Gookin had three hits and three runs in the win. Lilly See had two hits and two runs. Hayden Gookin had two hits and one run. Elsa Appleton, Abbie Moss and Courtney Franck all had single hits, with Courtney Franck also rounding the bases once. Kara Swantz had two runs and Eryn Jackson had one run in the match. Kameron Brand added two hits.
Olivia Haverback took the win, with four strikeouts and six base on balls.
Wednesday, June 14 The Mustangs split in a two-game match-up with No. 1 ranked Williamsburg, which coach Robin Brand said was a “big night” for the program.
Game one Williamsburg took the first game of the doubleheader with a 2-0 win over the Mustangs.
Williamsburg added their runs in the second and third innings of the game.
The Mustangs had a single hit against Williamsburg from Hayden Gookin, while Libby Dix and See got to base on balls.
Williamsburg’s Peyton Driscoll had 12 strikeouts in the match while only allowing two hits in the seven innings pitched.
Hayden Gookin took the loss for the Mustangs, pitching seven innings with four strikeouts, four base on balls, six hits and two runs.
Game two
The Mustangs did not let their bats stay silent in the nightcap against Williamsburg, as they galloped to a 6-2 win over Williamsburg.
The Mustangs had three runs in the third inning and two more in the fifth inning. Williamsburg avoided the shutout by notching two points in the sixth inning, but the Mustangs added one more security run at the bottom of that inning to take the 6-2 win.
Hayden Gookin’s bat was again on fire for the Mustangs, notching three hits in the win. Lily See had two hits and two trips around the bases for the Mustangs. Swantz added two runs, and Jackson and Addison Gookin rounded out the Mustangs scoring.
Olivia Haverback took the win, pitching all seven innings, with two strikeouts and six hits, two runs and two base on balls.
Roland-Story tournament The Mustangs picked up two wins and two losses in the Roland-Story Kiwanis Softball tournament Friday, June 16 and Saturday, June 17.
“We played a top team, North Polk, who is ranked No. 4 in class 4A, and then beat Gilbert,” Brand said. “It was a weekend filled with opportunities for us to get better.”
Game one The Mustangs lost to North Polk in a 5-2 game Friday, June 16.
North Polk added their five runs in the first three innings of the game. Mount Vernon had two runs in the sixth inning.
See provided two hits and one run in the loss. Brand and Eryn Jackson provided the additional hits. Addison Gookin got to base on balls and rounded the bases in when See hit her home run in the sixth.
Hayden Gookin took the loss, with three strikeouts, eight hits, five runs and one base on ball.
Game two
The Mustangs earned a shutout victory against Gilbert, 9-0 to cap off Friday’s play.
See and Kenna Rollinger led the Mustangs with hits, with two each. One of Rollinger’s hits was a home run, helping herself and three teammates round the bases. See and Swantz had two runs in the game, and Addison Gookin, Brand, Appleton and Taylor Franck were the other four who scored points in the game.
Olivia Haverback had the win, pitching seven innings with one strike out, three hits and two base on balls.
Game three
The Mustangs earned a win against Boone 3-1 Saturday, July 17.
Boone was first on the scoreboard with their solo run at the top of the fourth. The Mustangs hit back, adding a run in that inning and one each in the fifth and sixth innings as well.
Rollinger, Brand, and Dix had two hits each, while See and Addison Gookin provided one. Taylor Franck, Olivia Haverback and Swantz all rounded the bases once in the game.
Hayden Gookin took the win, with seven innings pitched with six strikeouts, five hits,one run and two base on balls.
Game four
The Mustangs lost to ADM in the final game they played in the tournament, 10-2.
The Mustangs were first on the scoreboard with a run at the top of the third inning.
ADM knocked a total of nine runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to secure the win. Mount Vernon added a run in the top of the sixth, and ADM added one more security run that inning as well.
