The Mount Vernon varsity softball team won seven straight games last week, improving to 13-2, and moving into second-place in the WaMaC East, behind only Solon.
Monday, June 5
The Mustangs headed to Center Point-Urbana to sink the home team 1-0 and 10-3 in doubleheader action.
Game One The Stormin’ Pointers held the Mustangs to just one run, but were unable to score themselves in the 1-0 loss.
Kameron Brand was the sole Mount Vernon player to have more than one hit as she went 2-3.
Hayden Gookin, who will be a freshman in the fall, pitched seven innings and struck out seven.
Game Two The second game of the series was more productive for both teams, with the Mustangs coming out on top 10-3.
Lilly See had three hits in the effort, one of them a homer, and batted home three teammates.
Olivia Haverback took the win on the mound, pitching for seven innings, striking out two.
Brand and Courtney Franck each contributed two RBIs.
Wednesday, June 7 A home doubleheader with Marion followed two days later, with the Wolves putting up a fight in their two single-run losses.
Game One
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, when the Mustangs posted their only run of the game off of an Elsa Appleton RBI. It was enough to for the team to hold on and win it 1-0.
Brand doubled in the effort.
Haverback again pitched for the Mustangs, throwing for seven and striking out three.
Game Two
The second game went into two extra innings tied 4-4 before the Mustangs outfoxed the Wolves in the ninth, two runs to just one, to win it 6-5.
Brand had two hits in four trips to the plate, including a double and an RBI.
Kenna Rollinger also had two hits, but with five at-bats, resulting in two doubles and two runs batted in.
Courtney Franck offered two more RBIs.
Hayden Gookin pitched all nine innings, and struck out six batters.
Friday, June 9The Mustangs played coyote to the Interstate 35 Roadrunners, ultimately foiling the visiting team 3-2.
The game was locked at two each until Mount Vernon posted the game-winning run in the sixth.
Lilly See’s two hits produced a triple and an RBI, and the senior was allowed a stolen base.
Elsa Appleton had Mount Vernon’s only other RBI.
Hayden Gookin was again on the hump, pitching seven innings and fanning nine in the win.
Saturday, June 10A doubleheader at Central DeWitt saw the Mustangs come out on top 9-2 and 4-0 over the Sabers.
Game One
The Mustangs were actually trailing for the majority of their 9-2 game one win, but the team sprang to action in the sixth to score all nine of their runs.
One catalyst was Addison Gookin, who had two hits, both doubles, and drove in three teammates.
Younger sister Hayden Gookin pitched the game’s seven innings, striking out seven for an average of one strikeout per inning.
Game Two
Kenna Rollinger and Addison Gookin were two of the second game’s key offensive players, with Rollinger managing a double and an RBI and Gookin scoring an RBI and a stolen base.
Olivia Haverback was awarded the win on the mound. The sophomore threw all seven innings and struck out two.
