The Mount Vernon varsity baseball squad dropped to 3-12 last week, with losses to CPU, Central DeWitt, and Marion.
While currently last place in their conference, the Mustangs still have roughly half a season to turn their fortunes around to contend in the WaMaC East.
Monday, June 5The first challenge for the Mustangs was a doubleheader on the road with Center Point-Urbana.
The Stormin’ Pointers won both games, with the second game almost going a different direction.
Game One Center Point jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half of the game, with the visiting Mustangs not posting runs until the sixth and seventh innings.
The effort came short of reversing the lead, and Mount Vernon fell 6-2.
Maddox Rollinger and Ryne Moeller each turned in solid offensive efforts, with Rollinger scoring one of his teammates, and Moeller stealing a pair of bases.
Colin Bentley also contributed an RBI to the effort.
Game Two
The Mustangs played the Stormin’ Pointers a little more aggressively in the second of two games, but the home team got the best of the visiting Mount Vernon team, 8-7.
Colin Bentley and Miles Francois each contributed an RBI to the effort. Ryne Moeller shouldered the loss on the mound, pitching for four innings, and striking out two.
Tuesday, June 6Central DeWitt didn’t prove as gentle, as the Sabres defeated the visiting Mustangs by scores of 18-3 and 13-3.
Thursday, June 8 The Mustangs showed some resistance to the visiting Marion Wolves, who scored six runs in the first inning of the eventual 9-2 win.
Mount Vernon responded with a pair of runs in the second to make it 7-2 (the Sabres posted another run in the second), but it was as close as the Mustangs would get to the Wolves.
Marion charted another run in the third and fifth innings, walking away with a 9-2 victory.
Ryne Moeller contributed an RBI to the loss, and Mason Hartman pitched the majority of the game, throwing for four innings and striking out five.
