The Lisbon Lions varsity softball team improved to 13-3 last week, picking up seven wins before succumbing to Wapsie Valley in the final game of the Jesup Tournament on Saturday.
The team has a considerable first-place lead in the Tri-Rivers East. The week also saw coach Bob Bunting picking up his 1,300th career win.
Monday, June 5The Lions hosted the Springville Orioles for a doubleheader Monday, winning 6-4 and 10-4.
Game One
Blair Baltes and Chloe Clausen had important hits in the first matchup, with Clausen’s double in the second inning scoring two Lions, and Baltes providing another RBI and two hits.
Ryleigh Allgood presided over the win on the mound, pitching the game’s seven innings, and striking out 14, for an average of two batters per inning.
Game Two The Lions had an easier time with the Orioles in their second game.
Ella Clark had two hits — including a home run, and drove in five runs.
Allgood again oversaw the effort on the mound, pitching just short of three innings, and striking out four batters.
Thursday, June 8 The team traveled three nights later to take on the Midland Eagles in another doubleheader.
The Lions got the best of their hosts 12-0 and 10-0.
Game One Clark drove in two runners and stole a base in the 12-0 win.
Allgood was awarded another victory, pitching three innings and again fanning four. The senior Lions pitcher also charted two RBIs.
Game Two The Lions dominated the second game as well, taking it to 10-0 for their fourth win of the week.
Peyton Robinson’s sole hit drove in two teammates.
Kaitlynn Hasselbusch also had two RBIs.
Addi Petersen had a successful turn on the mound, throwing six innings and striking out 10.
Friday, June 9 Lisbon fought their way to a second-place finish in the weekend’s Jesup Tournament, winning three games over two days before being toppled in the championship by Wapsie Valley.
First Round
The Lions first took on West Central, easily eliminating the Blue Devils 16-0.
Robinson had the hot bat in the first round game, with three hits (including a double and a triple) leading to three RBIs. The senior also stole a base.
Allgood pitched three innings, and struck out eight.
Quarterfinals The quarterfinals found the Lions playing Monticello, who had earlier defeated Crestwood 6-5 in the first round of the tournament.
Lisbon sent the Panthers packing with a 4-2 victory.
Allgood was predictably solid on both sides of the plate, drumming up two RBIs and striking out eight batters in six innings pitched.
Petersen had an additional RBI.
Saturday, June 10Semifinals
West Delaware was the next team to fall to Lisbon, losing the semifinal game 5-3.
The Hawks tied the game at three in the fifth inning, but the Lions put the contest away with two more runs in the seventh to eke out the victory and advance to the championship game.
Allgood was again crucial to the effort, producing four hits in her four at-bats, including a double. An RBI resulted. She also pitched the entirety of the game, and struck out
Blair Baltes scored three teammates on her one hit.
Championship
The Wapsie Valley Warriors (who improved to 14-4) ultimately proved too much for the Lions, taking the championship game 4-0.
The Warriors had beated Cascade 8-3 in the semifinals earlier in the day,
Lions dropped to 13-3 with their first loss since the month of May.
