A pair of Mount Vernon softball standouts were members of the Kirkwood Eagles softball team this spring, and earned a trip to the Division II softball World Series.
For those who follow local softball, the names Jenna Sprague and Nadia Telecky are ones they’ve been familiar with from their play at Mount Vernon High School. The two were on the varsity team from 2018 through 2022. Sprague served as a pitcher and second base player for the Mustangs and Telecky covered left field.
Sprague and Telecky were recognized as All-Conference and All-State performers multiple seasons. They made multiple trips to the state tournament and, in 2022, helped win Mount Vernon’s first softball state championship.
Sprague and Telecky kept up those winning ways when they joined the Kirkwood Eagles softball team this year, as the Eagles had a season record of 46-18. The Eagles won the Iowa Junior College Conference and regional matches, which qualified Kirkwood for the National Junior College World Series in South Carolina. The Eagles won their first-round game in the contest 13-1, but lost to Murray State in round two 3-1. The team played again against South Suburban in consolations, where they recorded a 2-0 win.
The Eagles post-season ended with a 10-2 loss against Parkland Thursday, May 25.
Telecky had 52 appearances at bat, with 18 runs and 15 hits. She played in 34 games this season. Sprague started as pitcher in 13 games for the Eagles this past season, winning 10 of those games.
