The Scooter’s Coffee location flag has officially been hung, just ahead of Memorial Day.
The Duling family had wanted to have the American flag flown at their business during their grand opening back in the February timeframe, but when they went to hang the flag that morning, the cord detached from the pole.
The Duling’s sought help from other businesses and individuals in Mount Vernon during the spring to rehang the flag cord, but because of the softness of the ground this spring in front of the new construction, that proved to be a slight challenge.
Dick Simmons and Vance Light were finally able to get the nylon cord rehung on the flag pole ahead of Memorial Day weekend.
The flag at the business, however, has a personal connection for the Duling family.
The Duling’s son-in-law, Russ Schneider, served in Qatar and the flag flying at the business was one that flew while he was stationed overseas.
“The flag will be lit 24 hours a day and should look very nice for any visitors coming to Mount Vernon in the future,” Teresa Duling said.
The Mount Vernon American Legion has offered in the past to hold a formal ceremony dedicating the flag at the location, but the Duling’s wanted to get the flag hung by Memorial Day weekend.
Scooter’s Coffee is also in a competition for the store to win $1,000 to be given to the baristas, as well as a matching $1,000 to be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project. Customers need to add sweet cold foam to any cold drinks the coffee shop offers from now through Sunday, June 4.
“We are currently in second place in the competition and could easily win this,” Teresa said.
