Mount Vernon Fire Department was dispatched to a residential structure fire Friday evening. According to Mount Vernon Fire Chief Nathan Goodlove, the page came at 9:15 on Friday, May 26, at 724 8th Avenue NW in Mount Vernon, across from the Cornell Baseball fields.
“Mount Vernon Fire crews arrived on scene to find a single story home with heavy fire showing from a drive under garage that had extended into the first floor and roof areas,” Goodlove said. “Fire crews on scene operated in an aggressive offensive mode, deploying hand lines for extinguishing the flames in the garage, main floor and roof.”
Crews gained access to the roof and cut holes to release the products of combustion, allowing interior conditions to become more tenable for crews to operate and search inside.
During search operations, Goodlove said the crews located a pet cat that had succumbed to the effects of smoke inhalation.
The occupant of the home was able to evacuate himself and his pet dog prior to the fire department’s arrival.
“At approximately 9:46 p.m., the fire was brought under control and aggressive overhaul operations took place until termination of the incident at 1:09 a.m. Saturday,” Goodlove said.
The residence sustained heavy heat and smoke damage throughout, with the main fire damage located in and above the drive under garage.
Mutual aid was provided by Lisbon Fire Department, Solon Fire Department, Springville Fire Department, Mechanicsville Fire Department and Martelle Fire Department.
Further assistance was provided by Lisbon Mount Vernon Ambulance Service, Lisbon Mount Vernon Police Department, and Alliant Energy for utility control.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
