Schools are letting out. Temperatures are warming up.
And young kids will soon be out enjoying activities again this summer.
Another of the seasonal reminders here at the newspaper for motorists – time to watch the speedometers and the roadways to help keep people safe.
A few weeks ago, Mount Vernon Schools was sending a reminder for a traffic concern they were seeing – people passing through the crosswalk near Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church without stopping at the stop signs. Those signs have been up for more than three years now, and their proximity to the school reiterates what a safety concern that crossing is for a street that can get busy near softball and baseball diamonds, the Mount Vernon Schools trail system and all of the schools amenities.
Mount Vernon Police Department was also letting the public know that they have purchased a mobile speed sign, to help motorists know their speeds in areas. That sign, while it will not write tickets, will collect data on the number of vehicles on roads, their average speeds, if speed was reduced by being reminded of the posted speed limit and time of days incidents happen. It’s a way for them to collect data that may lead to future enforcement, but also as a reminder to citizens on some of the busier thoroughfares in our communities of the posted speed limits and following them to keep everyone safe.
Mount Vernon pool and the Lisbon Splash Pad are also both targeting opening dates around or shortly after Memorial Day this year, so especially around the parks in both communities that house these attractive water features it is a good time to be more mindful and alert to help everyone’s summer be safe.
