Are you wondering what the large signs are along the trail from Nature Park to the Skate Park?
They are part of the community summer StoryWalk sponsored by Hills Bank, Cole Public Library, and the Mount Vernon School Library.
What is a StoryWalk?
A StoryWalk is a book that is cut apart and the pages are divided along a trail for walking. In addition to the book there are activities or questions to deepen your experience as you read and walk. Our first book is Creekfinding by Mount Vernon author Jacqueline Briggs Martin.
Our StoryWalk features a group of Mount Vernon sixth grade students reading the story aloud. The recording is accessible through a QR code on each of our StoryWalk signs.
The StoryWalk project was started in Vermont in 2007 by a chronic disease specialist who was looking for a way to encourage community members to be more active. Since then, StoryWalks have grown in popularity throughout the United States and beyond.
To librarians a StoryWalk is about more than being active it is also about supporting family literacy, and helping grow a child’s love of reading. In August I will let you know the trail and book we will feature next. So, put on your walking shoes, head to Nature Park on Third Street SE and enjoy the StoryWalk.
