On Sunday, April 30, the United Methodist Church of Mount Vernon had over 105 volunteers helping with a wide variety of projects throughout the Mount Vernon and Lisbon community. The volunteers included adults and youth, and athletes from Cornell College. The UMCMV reached out to our community to get a list of projects and then assigned volunteers to a project that fit their talents. A few examples of the projects were the UMCMV Praise Team band lead a praise service at Hallmark Care Facility, window washing, and lawn clean up at Chapel View apartments. Cleaning and carpentry work at South East Linn Community Center, and spring clean-up at Bryant Park, Nature Park and the Mount Vernon Cemetery. In addition to public projects, they helped individuals with spring yard work and minor home repairs. “May Day” baskets were also delivered to the members of the organizations listed previously, but also to elderly shut-ins in MV/L. The volunteers started with a breakfast and short worship service before going out to serve on their projects. “It is exciting to provide this “Service Sunday” again to our community, we have truly missed not being able to serve in this fashion due to COVID-19.” Jen Hoffman one of the committee co-chairs stated.
